The city owes its name to its geography, being positioned across a hilltop – “vo hrid”.
The city sits on the banks of the enchanting Ohrid Lake, and is located about 170 kilometres southwest of the North Macedonian capital, Skopje. Due to its serene landscape, rich history and cultural heritage, Ohrid has been a UNESCO World Heritage listed site since 1979.
The city is believed to be one of the oldest settlements in the Balkans, with archaeological sites that date back to Neolithic era, and has also been centre to an opulent religious history where as many as 365 churches were built within the city, one for each day of the year.
