This prehistoric structure is housed on a non-volcanic rock, at an altitude of 1,013 meters, near the local village after which is was named. Kokino is thought to have been used as an ancient observatory to study the sun and the moon, and is an estimated 3,800 years old.
In 2005, the North American space agency, NASA, had ranked this ancient observatory as number four on the list of the 15 most important observatories worldwide, which makes it one of the most valuable sites of this kind on the planet.
