The island of Santorini is characterised by its distinct shape of an inverted “C”. This is due to the extremely powerful volcanic eruption that took place some 3,600 years ago.

The effect of the eruption gave birth to a 60 meter-high tsunami which ultimately led to the destruction of the Minoan civilisation in neighbouring Crete.

Post-eruption, the centre of the island sank into the Aegean Sea, leaving behind a volcanic crater with high cliffs, warm volcanic waters, and a distinct symbol of the island today.

Santorini, with its temperate Mediterranean climate, is considered one of Europe’s favourite holiday destinations. And rightly so, it is a destination synonymous with high-level tourism.

In summer, a dry, seasonal northeast wind known as ‘Meltemi sweeps across the island. Meanwhile, in winter, the temperature never falls below 10 degrees celsius.
Rains are only native to the winter months. During summer, in contrast, there are nothing but clear skies and sunshine – a facet that tourists adore!
