From a historical point of view, Zagreb was created by the merging of two settlements in the neighbouring hills, the civilian Gradec and the Episcopal Kaptol, which form the nucleus of today’s city, its historic centre.
In the immediate vicinity of the city is Sljeme. Sitting at 1,033 meters above sea level, it’s a much favoured and popular outing location for the citizens of Zagreb. Its main attractions are its beautiful hiking trails and ski slope. They entice hordes of tourists during the winter season. Both Sljeme and the summit of Medvednica are ideal spots for some outdoor rest and relaxation. But best of all, they’re only a stone’s throw away from the city centre.
