The city was named after the oak forest ‘dubrava’ and founded in the 7th century. Archeological findings, however, point to an even older founding history. For a long time, this fortress was the only worthy opponent of the Venetian Republic on the Adriatic Sea.
Dubrovnik is considered one of the most beautiful medieval fortress cities on the planet. Its walls span 1,940 meters in length and are completely preserved. That in itself is quite rare and almost an exception for this part of the world.
Dubrovnik’s main city street is the famous Stradun, or as the locals call it, the “Placa”. It was formed by the embankment of the canal that separated the coast and the island where Dubrovnik once stood.
