Welcome toSofia
Sofia is nestled in the west of Bulgaria, not far from the Serbian border. It is home to about 1.3 million inhabitants.
The most visited tourist attraction in the city is the Church of Alexander Nevsky. Being one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world, it was named after Saint Alexander Nevsky, the patron saint of the emperor and his family. It is considered a symbol not only of Sofia, but of the entirety of Bulgaria.
Beneath the city centre lies an entire ancient city known as Serdica, invisible to local residents and tourists. Serdica was a Roman city that had once been very significant in the Balkans due to its favourable geographical position.
