This impressive mountain is located in the south of Bulgaria. Its highest peak, Musal, proudly sits at almost 3 kilometres above sea level.

Between the Alps and the Caucasus, Rila is the largest mountain top within the region and a place that simply attracts the curious.

We willl briefly highlight a few of the many appealing tourist attractions that will keep any explorer satisfied:

Rila Monastery, built in the 10th century, this historic landmark is one of the largest and most momentous monasteries in Bulgaria.

Mountain center Borovets (Chamkoria) is a modern ski resort, rich with hotels, restaurants, bars and a network of ski slopes and cable cars scattered along the slopes of Mount Rila. This Bulgarian winter resort has an active history dating back to 1896.

The seven lakes of Rila are the most well-known and visited lakes of this imposing mountain. All are located at 2,100 to 2,500 meters above sea level.
An interesting fact is that they were named after their unusual shape. Each lake has a name that corresponds to its most characteristic feature: Trilistnika (“The Trefoil”), Bliznaka (“The Twin”), Babreka (“The Kidney”), Oko, Salzata (“The Tear”), Ribnoto Ezero (“The Fish Lake”) and Dolnoto Ezero (“The Lower Lake”).
