About 7 kilometres south of Mostar, this fairytale-like village is nestled alongside the crystal waters of the Buna river. The cold flowing currents pass-by a historic Tekija (Sufi-dervish spiritual house). Several enticing restaurants and an Ottoman-era homestead add to the enchanting character of this quaint little gem.
Inspired by the Buna river’s beauty, the Turkish sultan ordered the construction of the Tekke (khanqah, dervish house) in 1520. And so it was built at the very source of the underground river, alongside a wall stretching 200 meters high. It was and continues to be, a venue for dervish Zikr praise-chanting that takes place three nights a week.
Many have called this place one of the most beautiful of the former Yugoslavia, and certainly not without reason.
The Tekija (or Tekke) in Blagaj, and its beautiful gardens are open to visitors throughout the year. It’s a place where you can sip on a refreshing beverage, including tea or Turkish-style coffee, whilst marvelling at the magnificent views of the Buna River.
